Do your wrists feel stiff, achy, or fatigued after prolonged periods of typing or scrolling? You are not alone. As physiotherapists, we commonly observe desk-based professionals presenting with symptoms of what is often referred to as “Tech-Wrist.”
This condition develops when the forearm musculature becomes tight due to repetitive computer-related activities. Incorporating a few simple wrist stretches can help maintain mobility and reduce discomfort.
Prolonged overuse of the wrist muscles through typing, mouse usage, and whiteboard writing can lead to tightening of the forearm muscles and tendons, reduced blood flow, and, in some cases, nerve compression. Over time, this may result in stiffness, tingling sensations, and radiating pain extending to the palm and fingers.
A simple and effective intervention is the regular practice of wrist stretches.
These exercises require no special equipment and only five minutes of your time, performed three times a day. Each stretch should be held for 15 seconds and repeated as recommended.
Extend one arm with the palm facing downward.
Using the opposite hand, gently pull the fingers downward toward the body and hold for 15 seconds.
This stretch improves the flexibility of the wrist extensor muscles.
Extend one arm with the palm facing upward.
Using the opposite hand, gently pull the fingers downward toward the floor and hold for 15 seconds.
This stretch enhances the flexibility of the wrist flexor muscles.
Place the palms together in front of the chest in a prayer position.
Gently press the palms together, lower the hands toward the waist, and hold for 15 seconds.
This posture helps release forearm tension and may reduce nerve compression.
Place the palms on a desk or table with the fingers facing forward.
Slowly rock the body forward and backward, repeating the movement 5–6 times.
Maintain an upright posture throughout the exercise.
Ensure the keyboard is positioned at elbow height.
Avoid excessive wrist flexion or extension; maintain a neutral wrist posture.
Take regular breaks every 45 minutes and use a mouse pad with wrist support.
If wrist pain persists beyond one week, is accompanied by numbness or tingling in the fingers, or worsens at night, professional consultation at Narayana One Health is advised to prevent conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome or wrist tendinitis.
